David began his music career in
1978 playing the violin with the Carlsbad Suzuki Strings program, studying
privately with Donna Christmas. His passion turned to the viola in 1981 after
hearing the instrument for the first time.
Studying viola privately with Doris Strother throughout junior high and high school, David focused his music studies solely to the viola at California State University, Long Beach studying with Robert Becker. While attending CSU, Long Beach, David was a member of the CSULB University String Quartet for three years and performed as principal violist of the University Symphony Orchestra. In 1992 David was a soloist with the CSU, Long Beach Symphony Orchestra performing the Walton Viola Concerto. He is still the only viola soloist to date to have performed with the orchestra. After receiving his Bachelors of Music degree in Performance, David went on to the Eastman School of Music where he continued his studies with James Dunham of the Cleveland Quartet. David performed with the Rochester and Erie Philharmonic Symphony Orchestras as well as many other chamber ensembles while studying for his Masters degree in New York. David received his Masters of Music in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music in 1996. David has performed extensively in a wide variety of groups, including the Mozart Camerata Chamber Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, guest-performing artist at the Fairbanks Chamber Music Festival, principal violist of the Irvine Chamber Orchestra and back-up orchestras with artists such as Smokey Robinson, James Taylor, Mannheim Steamroller, Chuck Mangione, Dave Brubeck, Bill Conti, and Rosemary Clooney. David has also appeared in such movies as The Relic, My Fellow Americans and The Phantom. David is the founder and Artistic Director of the Carlsbad Chamber Concert Series. This concert series is intended to bring the highest quality classical music the community in the form of recitals and small chamber ensembles as well as music educational resource not only for the students of the Carlsbad Strings Education Association but for all the schools within the Carlsbad Unified School District.
