These students need to have basic music reading skills and to be able to play a one-octave scale with reasonably fair tone and intonation. They should be almost finished with Suzuki Book 1 (or equivalent). Rehearsals are every Sunday throughout the concert season from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm at CSUF, New Music Building, room 127.
String players need to have completed at least Book 2 of Suzuki (or equivalent), and have a basic knowledge of positions. Strings and Winds must be able to play several two-octave major and minor scales and need to have good sight-reading skills. Winds must also be able to produce a good characteristic sound with all basic articulations. Percussionists must be able to tune Timpani and must have a basic knowledge of mallets. Eligibility: At the time of the first rehearsal, Sunday, September 7, 2008, candidates must be no older than 20 years of age. YOOF seeks young musicians of all levels! See below for specific requirements.
Application: To schedule an audition, please fill out and submit an application online or contact the Youth Orchestra Office at (559) 298-9999. Click here to apply online.
Scheduling: Candidates will be notified by telephone of their audition time. Auditions are scheduled in ten-minute intervals. Auditions for each instrument group are generally held on a single day (see below). If it is impossible for you to audition according to the scheduled day, an alternate date will be considered but not guaranteed. Please make every effort to audition on the appropriate audition date! (Times are subject to change. Please check website.)

Location: All auditions will be held in the CSUF Music Building in Dr. Loewenheim’s Studio, Room #165. Adjoining practice rooms will be available for warm-up and it is recommended that each candidate arrive 10-15 minutes early to prepare. Parents may wait in the adjoining classroom during the audition. Parking permits are normally not required on Saturday and Sunday. Please do not park in the 30 minute zones.
Audition Requirements: YOOF is committed to providing a pleasant and successful audition experience for each young musician! Be prepared to perform a scale of your choice and two contrasting pieces of your choice. No accompanists are allowed. NOTE: In addition to new candidates, all continuing YOOF members are required to audition each year.
Results: All candidates will be contacted by telephone by Sept. 1, 2008. If accepted, players will be placed into one of three orchestras with the goal of ensuring both a positive experience for each musician and the success of each ensemble.
Seating: The conductor will determine seating following this audition. Players will be informed of their seating at the first rehearsal on Sunday, September 7, 2008. The decision of the conductor is final. There will be no challenges throughout the season in any of the groups. The conductor reserves the right to make adjustments throughout the season.
Fee: There will be a $20 audition fee payable before the audition for new candidates only. Checks may be payable to YOOF.
Yearly Tuition: YCO-$200, YSO-$275, YPO-$335. All tuition is due before the second rehearsal. There will be a 25% discount for all younger siblings. Payment plans are available.
